livarp-cli is distributed in ISO-HYBRID format (~475Mo), ready to put on a CD or used on a USBkey with the dd command to execute in the livarp_040_cli.iso directory:
sudo dd if=livarp_040_cli.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M;sync
assuming /dev/sdX is the path of your usb stick.

utilisation

note that you can use livarp-cli out-of-the-box.. who need graphical interface ?? ;)

livarp-cli starts with the syslinux menu. the default entry launches the 686 kernel (for modern computers). choose the 'live 486' entry if your processor is older and doesn't support pae options.

in live session, livarp launches dvtm after the cli-keyboard-selector.

livarp-cli comes with dvtwm as cli-window-managers:

[h] & [k] + Enter let you access to the Help & Keys files. hit the [f] key + Enter display shell functions.

Mod-x : Close focused window
Mod-l/h : Increases/Decreases the master area width about 5% (all except grid and fullscreen layout)

Mod-u/i : Focus next/previous non minimized window
Mod-m : Maximize current window (change to fullscreen layout)

installation

goto the 'Install' syslinux menu entry. and follow instructions: installer is default Debian text-install.

the installer is explicite, please refer to the official Debian installer wiki for more informations.

once installation is finish, your computer will reboot and launch the new system from grub screen

building your own system

this is not a howto, but only some advices about a Debian system building process...

so here are the steps i follow to build my Debian system:

first of all: try to be as honest as possible about your needs and ethics. :)

1 - choice of repositories depending on your needs and the way you think
the first think to consider is that you have a machine, and if it needs non-free stuff to work correctly, you can't do nothing about it... next time, you'll chose a machine that supports free softwares and firmwares ;)
the file to modify to add Debian or extra repositories is /etc/apt/sources.list. here is a full Debian Wheezy sources.list with deb-multimedia support

after modification, don't forget to update your sources:

and install the deb-multimedia keyring

2 - choice of environment depending on your machine and the way you work
so DE or not DE, that is the question: a Desktop Environment will give you a full desktop with a file-manager, media-player, a panel, a menu, a configuration-tool... this is cool, and easy, but a little heavy, and a DE adds plenty af apps you'll never use.
- so if your machine is powerfull enough to run a full Desktop Environment, and you don't really care about space or memory, go ahead and install Gnome/KDE/Xfce or maybe LXDE (lighter).
- if your machine is not as powerfull as you wanted and/or you want to control all apps installed on your system, you could try an NO-DE system, with a window-manager, an independant menu or panel, a file manager etc ... please visit my full wms wiki to make your choise between many independant wms.
3 - choice of applications depending on your machine and what you need
if you've decided to use a DE, almost apps you need are already present on your system
if you've decided to use a NO-DE system, you'll need to add all apps you need separately. keep in mind to install ONLY needed applications: lighter is better :) .
note: with livarp-cli, using the "debin" alias execute the command "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends" to prevent uneeded dependancies installation.
